What is MCP, and how does it work with a DAM?

Availability

The MediaValet MCP Server is currently in development in MV Labs and is not yet available to customers. This article explains how MCP works and what it can make possible when connected to a DAM.

What is MCP?

Imagine asking your AI assistant to find your organization’s latest product images, approved logos, or campaign materials, without having to open your DAM and search for them yourself. That’s what MCP (Model Context Protocol) makes possible.

MCP is an open standard that let AI assistants connect to tools like MediaValet. You tell your AI assistant what you're looking for, and it can search your DAM on your behalf and return relevant results right in the conversation.

Why does MCP matter for a DAM?

A DAM is where your organization manages its images, videos, logos and documents. Without MCP, using those assets in AI-assisted work often means leaving your AI assistant, searching the DAM, downloading a file and bringing it back. With MCP, your AI assistant can search the DAM and retrieve assets for you.

What can you do with MCP and a DAM?

Here are some common ways teams can use MCP with a DAM:

  • Find the right asset without knowing the file name. A campaign manager needs the company logo for a partner deck but doesn’t know what the file is called. They ask, “Find our logo on a dark background,” and their AI assistant searches the DAM for matching assets.
  • Build presentations and documents with real assets. A sales rep preparing a pitch asks, “Find product photos I can use in a sales presentation.” The AI assistant brings images from the DAM into the draft, so the deck starts with real assets instead of placeholders.
  • Ask what's inside a file. A customer success manager needs talking points before a client call. They ask, “What are the key features listed in our product sheet?” and get answers without opening the document themselves.
  • Access your library through different AI assistants. One team works in Claude, another in ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot. Because MCP is an open standard, the same DAM content can be made available in each AI assistant that supports MCP, so nobody has to change how they work.

What does an MCP and DAM workflow look like?

Here's an example of how a marketing team might use MCP with a DAM to prepare a regional campaign:

  1. You ask your AI assistant for the approved logo and recent product photos for the campaign.
  2. Your AI assistant searches the DAM and shows you matching assets.
  3. You choose the assets that fit the region and channel, and check their usage rights.
  4. Your AI assistant brings the assets into the draft presentation or document you're working on.
  5. The finished work goes through your usual review and approval process before it's published.

What helps an AI assistant find the right asset?

An AI assistant can find assets through the information available to it, including how those assets are described in your DAM. The better your metadata, the easier it is to find relevant assets. Useful metadata includes:

  • Campaign or project name
  • Audience and region
  • Approval status
  • Expiration date or usage period

Keeping approval status and expiration dates current in your DAM also helps your team avoid using outdated assets, whether they search themselves or ask an AI assistant.

What stays the same when you use MCP?

MCP changes how you access assets, not how your DAM manages them. Your DAM is still where assets are stored, organized, reviewed and approved. MCP makes supported DAM content and capabilities available to your AI assistant; it does not replace your existing approval and governance processes.

FAQs

Do I need technical skills to use MCP with a DAM?

Once your AI assistant is connected to your DAM, you can ask for what you need in plain language. Setting up the connection may require some technical configuration.

Does MCP replace my DAM?

No. MCP connects your AI assistant to your DAM. Your DAM remains where your assets live and where they're managed.
