What are AI agents, and how do they work in a DAM?

Availability

MediaValet AI agents are currently in development in MV Labs with a select group of customers and are not yet available to everyone. This article explains how AI agents work and what they can make possible in a DAM.

AI agents are AI tools that complete a specific job for you inside your digital asset management (DAM) system, such as writing alt text or checking images against your brand rules. MediaValet AI agents work with the assets and brand rules in your MediaValet library, so routine work gets done across many assets at once.

What are AI agents in a DAM?

AI agents in a DAM are AI tools that each take on one job in your asset library, such as describing images for accessibility or checking them against your brand rules. An agent follows the instructions and rules your organization gives it, then applies them consistently to every asset it works on.

MediaValet AI agents go further than a single AI feature such as auto-tagging, which usually performs one fixed task the same way each time. A MediaValet AI agent is built around a goal, for example “every image has a useful description” or “every image follows our brand rules,” and works toward it across your library.

Think of an AI agent as a team member who handles the repetitive checking and describing, while your team handles the decisions.

What can AI agents do in a DAM?

Here are some ways teams can use AI agents in a DAM:

  • Describe images for accessibility. A web team publishing a campaign needs alt text for every image. An Alt Text agent generates alt text for existing assets and for new assets at upload, so nobody writes descriptions one image at a time.
  • Check images against brand rules. A brand manager wants to know whether images follow the brand guidelines. MediaValet Brand Guardrails checks images against your brand rules for logo, color, typography and imagery.
  • Add metadata to assets. A library with thousands of untagged assets is hard to search. A Metadata Enrichment agent suggests and applies metadata so assets are easier to find. MediaValet is still developing this agent.

What does an AI agent workflow look like?

Here is an example of how a marketing team might use an AI agent in a DAM to prepare images for a campaign:

  1. Your team uploads the campaign images to the DAM.
  2. An AI agent works on the images, for example by writing alt text or checking each image against your brand rules.
  3. You review the results and correct anything that is not right.
  4. The finished work goes through your usual review and approval process before it is published.

What helps AI agents do good work?

AI agents in a DAM do their best work when the guidance they start from is clear. Two things help most:

  • Clear brand rules. MediaValet Brand Guardrails checks images against your brand rules for logo, color, typography and imagery. The more specific your rules are, the more useful the check is.
  • Well-described assets. Complete, consistent metadata, such as campaign name, audience and approval status, gives any AI tool more to work with and helps your team find the right asset.

What stays the same when you use AI agents?

MediaValet AI agents change how routine work gets done, not how your DAM manages your assets. A DAM will still be where assets are stored, organized, reviewed and approved. AI agents do not replace your existing approval and governance processes, and your team still makes the final decisions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AI agents and MCP in a DAM?

MediaValet AI agents work inside your DAM and each handle one job, such as writing alt text or checking images against your brand rules. MCP is an open standard that lets external AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, or Microsoft Copilot connect to your DAM and search for assets on your behalf. AI agents do the work inside your DAM, while MCP lets external AI assistants connect to it.

Can AI agents make mistakes?

Yes. Like any AI tool, an AI agent can produce results that are incomplete or wrong, such as alt text that misses what matters in an image. Review what an AI agent produces and correct anything that isn’t right. Your usual review and approval process still applies before assets are published.
